Dr. Erica Rosenfeld Halverson is the chair of Theatre & Drama within the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, following a distinguished tenure as professor and chair in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Her research centers on how individuals learn through the arts, with a particular emphasis on the performing arts. Dr. Halverson has extensively studied art-making across various mediums, including theater, film, radio, and digital and physical creation.
In 2021, Dr. Halverson authored How the Arts Can Save Education: Transforming Teaching, Learning, and Instruction, advocating for integrating artistic processes into educational practices to foster creativity and engagement.
Beyond her academic endeavors, Dr. Halverson is a seasoned performer and co-founder of community youth arts programs such as Whoopensocker in Madison and Playmakers Lab Theatre (formerly Barrel of Monkeys) in Chicago. She actively collaborates with organizations like the Children's Theater of Madison, Four Seasons Theatre, and Music Theatre of Madison.
Dr. Halverson's commitment to education and the arts has been recognized with accolades including the Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award in 2020.
She holds a Ph.D. in Learning Sciences from Northwestern University, earned in 2005.
